A critiquing group is usually defined as a small number of screenwriters that work together, systematically reading and then critiquing each group member's screenplay.  They assist each other in a team effort (via group meetings) to guide each screenwright to create their own good spec script(s).  The group members are careful to assist in terms of teaching principles, rather then writing portions of the script for the member.

When SW began there were no small or separate critiquing groups, that has recently changed.  We now have Scripters World Critiquing Groups (SWCG).  SWCG encourages that some groups allow people who are writing their screenplays from scratch (while using the Scripters World Curriculum) join their groups.  It's up to the person who starts a new group to determine some of the basic ground rules.

Looking for a screenwriting partner?  SWCG is a good alternative.  You get the advantage of having several screenwriters assist you in the writing of your script but in the end it is YOUR SCRIPT!  So are royalty's at sale time. And, there is always the possibility that you will meet a screenwriter in the groups that could become a partner in the future.  You get to know them and their work and a level of trust can be built over time.

Want to Mentor?  You can utilize a SWCG group in the genre of your choice (or an "Any Genre") just for the purpose of helping a few others learn the craft of screenwriting.  In which case, you would not be required to write one yourself.  The minimum group size is 3, which can include the mentor.

Please keep in mind, if you do not see a group that deals with something you need, the solution is to start a group in the genre of your current script project.

Guidelines for starting a new genre group:

  • Prepare the meeting place in advance.  It can be an mIRC channel, Instant Messager, ICQ or just use the password protected forum that will be for group members only.  It's up to you, but the final choice should be, if possible, a democractic decision.

  • Do not start a new genre if an existing group of that genre is already seeking new members.

  • State the number of members you want in the group.  No less than 3, no more than 7 members are recommended.  The number can include yourself.  The low number 3 is there for those who wish to mentor by assisting others in writing their scripts but not necessarily write one themselves.

  • Become familiar with the Rules and maintain them.  You are not the boss, you are there to do maintenance (keep group updated) and to maintain order.  You can be voted out of the moderator position.

  • Be sure to have your correct email address in your post.

  • As soon as you start a new group contact us via email and let us know.  We will then create your forum with the password that you give us.

When you start a new group we will create a new forum for the group.  We will choose a password or you can email us with your choice.
